Great arguments! (and amusing, rather than angry)

I get so frustrated defending the genre some times. I'm bookmarking this. :-)

Awesome post! And thanks for the incredible shout out for BUTTERFLY TATTOO. The other day I was watching a movie with my daughters and the female lead spent most of her time squealing and looking helpless (and being useless!) I turned to my young girls and said, "See? This is what we call 'too stupid to live' if it happens in a romance. I write my women strong and capable because women ARE strong and capable."
They understood, and I think that's what many detractors don't understand about romance, simply because they don't give it a try. That today's heroine is strong, empowered, smart--yet still retains her feminine side and the unique qualities that make her a woman.

When I write my romances my target audience is the smart woman. Plus hopefully a few smart men as well.

Seriously, sex and romance are part of life and a writer of any type writes about life no matter what genre they write in.

You made so many good points I have no room to comment. You said it all. Besides I get so down or bored reading all this "serious" literature I want to go hang myself afterwards. Really, it doesn't have to all be deep and depressing to be meaningful. Why can't two (or three or more) people grow to love one another and form a meaningful bond that happens to turn into an HEA be meaningful? It's what most (if not all) of us want anyway.

I KNOW! Why do people think that boring/big words=intelligent?

Every time someone says romance novels are all about sex, I really have to ask "when was the last time you read one?". The answer is usually "well, never."

Yeah, EXACTLY.

"As for the HEA, does the police drama not have the bad guy getting caught?"

Yes. Exactly. And what REALLY irritates me is the idea that depressing endings = more intelligent fiction. That makes no sense!
