WTF Wednesday – Acid bath edition

So, thus far WTF Wednesday is winning. If you don’t like that, well, you need to vote. Though I might ignore you all, anyway. Muahahahahahahahahahaha!

*clears throat*

In any case, to start us off, I thought I’d talk a little about something making me go WTF – since that seems to be winning.

What could it be? Well, truthfully, many things hit my WTF button, but in this case, it’s a news story out of Hong Kong that caught my eye. Evidently, they’ve been experiencing a series of acid attacks on shoppers. Yes, acid attacks. Though no one seems to be reporting exactly what type of acid. Just acid.

Evidently over the last 13 months, someone has been dropping bottles of acid onto people shopping – to the tune of some 6 attacks and over 100 victims scarred by the attacks.

Thankfully, Hong Kong police made an arrest Sunday – in the wake of the latest attack in which the attacker hurled two bottles of acid into a crowd of people at a night market.

Okay, first of all, the WTFery starts with the fact that I didn’t know about these attacks. I can’t find any mention in US media before the arrest. Does that strike anyone else as odd? There are mentions in European, Asian, and Australian news reports. Nada in the US. Evidently, we don’t need to know that there have been these acid attacks. Because, you know, no US citizens or businesses ever go there. WTF?

Second – um, what is the point of these attacks? The attacker just hurls the bottle down in the middle of a crowd. There doesn’t seem to be any political statement, any particular target selection process – just someplace with a lot of people. So, this is totally random. But it isn’t to kill, or even to do debilitating harm – it’s just to scar. Has this guy been watching too much Nip/Tuck or something?

Third – Now, I don’t know about you, but If I knew there was someone going around flinging acid from rooftops into crowds of shoppers, I’d be doing a lot of online shopping. Yeah. Ebay is your friend.

Fourth – and this is my favorite – the guy they arrested is being arrested because he was in possession of two bottle tops. Now, I really hope this is just the CNN article being really vague and American-y about this, but that’s it? Did they at least check to see if the bottle tops had traces of acid? Because if this isn’t the right guy, there’s still some dude out there with a hard hate for shoppers and an unnatural affection for acid. Here’s hoping they have the right guy.
